Dirty Scrubs as Deadly Weapons?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

This article was scary to read.  Hospital Scrubs Deadly Mess

So maybe they aren’t weapons, but they can cause infections.

Can the answer be as simple as having the hospital wash scrubs?

Until about 20 years ago, nearly all hospitals laundered scrubs for their staff. A few hospitals are returning to that policy. St. Mary’s Health Center in St. Louis, Mo., reduced infections after cesarean births by more than 50% by giving all caregivers hospital-laundered scrubs, as well as requiring them to wear two layers of gloves.

Seems like an easy answer to me.  To my nurse readers out there, what do you think?

This also shows why for low risk moms homebirth could be safer.  Less exposure to germs.  I know as a doula I always jump in the shower and put on CLEAN clothes before heading to a birth.  I don’t want to bring any of my house germs to a birth.

Choir Christmas Miracle

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

For me singing in choir spiritually feeds me.  It is something that I need to do and luckily I enjoy it too.  I am especially loving it, because now Thing 2 has joined me at choir!

Or ward choir was planning on singing 3 numbers on the 20th.  I am an alto and you know how you need all the altos you can get!  I felt especially needed that day because we had

  • 1 women’s number with 3 parts only 4 of us were singing alto
  • We were singing the Hallalujah Chorus

I have fond memories of the Hallelujah Chorus.  We sang it every year in High School.  Also on my mission I had read this inspirational story about the music of The Messiah

It is about a woman who learned to play the Messiah in 5 days, because an organist had to leave town for a sick mother.

It really stuck with me and one day I mentioned it to my new companion, who loved music as much as I did.  She stopped, looked at me and said, “That was my mom.  I was the preschooler who played in the pews while she practiced.”

I loved that, it was a REAL story.

Saturday afternoon one of my doula clients called. She was a first time mom in her early birthing time.  We talked a few times that evening.  I got my ducks in a row and went to bed, knowing she would most likely call me at some point in the night.

This meant I would probably miss singing in the choir. All I could do was pray about it and try to let that go.  If I was meant to be there, then I would be.  If not, it would be ok!  I tried to give it up to God!

I woke up about every hour, wondering why they hadn’t called yet.  I am too excited when I know I am about to go to a birth to sleep really well.  :)

Finally at 5:30 they called. They were on the way to the hospital, her water had broken.   I got up, took a 3 minute shower to wake up, put on my doula outfit and head out!  I arrived at the hospital at 6.  Mom was in a room and already pushing.  She did AWESOME!  Baby was born at 6:24 and mom and baby were both great.

I usually stay for 1-2 hours after birth.  By 8:30 baby had nursed, mom and dad were doing wonderfully, I had moved their car from the Emergency Room Parking lot.  They seemed settled and ready to be on their own.  I asked if they were ok with me leaving.  They were!

I called home.  Told DH to have Thing 2 ready.  I drove home quickly, changed and got us both to church about 2 minutes after 9.   Thing 2 was a bit disgruntled we were a few minutes late.  I explained, “I was at a birth!”  He was totally surprised about that and then was fine with us being a bit late.  Luckily we didn’t have to be on the stand until a bit later in the program, so the timing worked perfectly!

I felt the spirit so very strongly while we sang. I kept tearing up and it was hard to sing.  I felt so honored to be a part of a beautiful birth that morning.  I kept seeing that baby being born in my mind, and remembering how peaceful and beautiful of a birth it was and couldn’t help thinking of the precious baby Jesus born over 2000 years ago and the angels singing to announce His birth.

The music of Christmas is so powerful and I felt like it was my own little Christmas Miracle that I was able to be there to sing with the choir!

Great article looking at elective cesareans

Putting Mothers and Babies at Risk:  Promoting the Elusive ‘‘Cesarean Delivery on Maternal Request’’

This looks at the risks of promoting even the idea that moms are choosing elective cesareans.  It points out that many moms choosing planned cesareans are being led to that choice by their OBs.  I have posted before about the need for better definitions of the type of cesareans.

I think one big problem of  promoting this idea of maternal choice cesareans, is then it starts to create women who decide THEY want to request a cesarean, because they think it is normal and safe.    I met a mom who was newly pregnant.  Being a childbirth educator I was asking about her plans.  She wanted to just have a cesarean.   I asked, “Is it because you are afraid of birth?” (which is the typical response I get when moms have said they WANT a cesarean)  Her answer was “No, because birth is gross.”

The scary thing is, depending on her care provider she may or may not be fully alerted to the risks of cesarean.

One OB who loves cesareans is going to say, “Great idea!”  and tell her only the positives and glosses over the risks.

Another OB would speak honestly about the benefits of vaginal birth for mom and baby and the risks associated with elective cesareans.  Then if after mom educates herself with this and other information she gathers she still wants a cesarean, I am fine with that choice.

I wouldn’t be fine with the choice if she had the first OB, because that isn’t really an informed choice at all.

Pictures in Christmas Cards Poll

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

So I love getting Christmas Cards.  It is sort of anti-climactic when it is just a card with a signature, no information about what the family has done this year.  No picture.  I feel like I am missing out a bit when I get cards like that.

Then we have friends who live far away who send us a Harry and David Gift basket.  Wow, that is so nice and unexpected.    Though I tend to eat half of it (all the chocolate things) before my DH even gets home.  (If it is in my house I will eat it.)

My DH really feels strongly the picture should be of the whole family.  I try to tell him, adults don’t look that different so just kids is fine.  He said, “Do a poll.”

So here it is!

Successful VBAC for Arizona Mom

Friday, December 18th, 2009

CNN talks about how Joy did have her vaginal birth on December 5th.   This demonstrates that VBAC can be safe for many moms.  It also shows the sad state that women’s rights to choice regarding birth is in.

It is sad that this mom have to go to lengths like moving to a new city 3 weeks before she was due in order to have a chance to birth vaginally.

Moms should have the right to have a vaginal birth after cesarean if that is what they want after being made aware of the risks.

I think the best thing that came out of this situation is national awareness was made of the issue.  Also Joy is a great example of how while it may mean making hard choices a mom can assert her birthing rights!

Episiotomy for the Placenta??????

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

This story of a mom whose OB cut an episiotomy after he missed the birth of the baby, saying he needed to for the placenta demonstrates the importance of Choosing your Care Provider wisely!

How can you do this?

  • Ask your Care Provider questions! Did the mom above ask her Care Provider “What percentage of your moms get episiotomies?”  His answer would have been very telling.
  • Ask local doulas for recommendations.
  • Ask L&D nurses for recommendations!
    • I have heard they can’t often tell you much if you just ask for a recommendation.  But if you ask a specific question.  Like, “I want to birth in a squatting position.  Do you know a care provider who encourages (or allows) this?  This provides an opening for them to say, “Yes, Dr. B or Midwife Y, does!”

Joy!

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

I love this face.  This is my Thing 3.  (My sweet baby Bryson, who is 4 now, but still my baby!)

This boy is full of joy and I love to be a part of it!

At night when I put him to bed he likes to hide under the blankets and I pretend I don’t know where he is.

I find him and he has that smile.   Just complete joy!

Then he hugs me and says he loves me.

Then I feel complete joy too!

(I am going to add a few personal touches to this birth blog of mine.  Just a little bit of my other world.  Where I am a Mom of 3 great boys.  Thing 1, Thing 2 and Thing 3)

Nursing Toys

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Not toys for your nursing baby to play with while nursing.  Not your child nursing their toys, though some of my favorite memories are of that.

“I love my truck, so I am breastfeeding it.”  What mom wouldn’t melt if her little boy said this to her while holding his truck to his chest.

No, this is about YOU nursing toys.

My friend Molly wrote about herself nursing Johnny Depp. It is a must read!

Guest Post by Nisha: Lies They Tell You about MSG

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

This weekend I went on one of the health and fitness industry’s most well respected and authoritative courses on advanced Kinetic Chain Assesment, (taught by my ex-boss, friend and mentor, Dax moy). That probably means nothing to you apart from a load of gobbledeegook but the stuff I learnt is going to affect you in a BIG way!!

One thing that shocked me beyond belief and made me scared first and foremost for my own baby and secondly for all of my pregnant clients, friends and readers was a little known fact about MSG and how seriously it can affect your pregnancy health.

Now I think that most of us know full well that MSG during pregnancy is bad for us, right? There was a big panic a few years ago and a lot of Chinese restaurants banned it from their food ingredients, but what none of us know (or very few of us) is that MSG can come under different guises of at least 40 different names that we would never suspect AND because it is combined with other food additives, the food manufacturers are NOT REQUIRED to list it as an ingredient on the label – which makes it very difficult to exclude from your preganncy diet.

And do you know where it is most widely used?

In BABY FOOD.
