Family Mission Statement – It is easier if you make one while the kids are young!

I have always wanted to make a Family Mission Statement and indeed a few years ago we tried to.  But we could never remember it.

Then I learned from the Eyers that they started with a long mission statement, then a short one and finally made it into 3 words so everyone could remember it.  Theirs is Broaden and Contribute.  Read the blog post to learn more.   What good is a mission statement if you don’t know it?

So we tried again.

Let me tell you, everyone has an opinion and T2 was very grumpy, “I have my own mission statement, I don’t want another one.”

His mission statement is “Onward” which is great.  I reassured him, he could still have that one too.

After a few family meetings I think we have it.  I wouldn’t say everyone loves it, but they don’t hate it.  Hence my advice, even if your kids are young, make a family mission statement now. Then they will grow up with it and trust me,  it will be easier to do it now!

Drumroll please….

“Develop and Share”

Here is the longer, few sentence version, which in our hearts we will know and understand when we say Develop and Share, but we won’t have to memorize the big one.  😉

We support each other as we Diligently Develop and Share our God Given Gifts, in ways that strengthen our Faith and Family and in order to improve the World around us.

Then the boys wanted a Motto. I was thinking Develop and Share would work, but being the good scouts they are, they wanted something about scouts.

We came up with Super Scout Skills.  (DH really wanted skills in there.) Everyone but T2 liked this.  He wants Be a Good Scout.

So one of those is our motto, we will see which one sticks.  But Develop and Share is our Mission Statement.

Does it make a difference to have one?  Time will tell.
