Five Things for Friday – 2

March 1, 2013 in Doula, Life-As, Parenting

-1-

T1 was sick and home alone without me to help because I was out of town with T2 on one of his competitions.  Dad’s just don’t take care of kids the way moms do. (at least in our house)

I asked how he did when I got home.  He said, “I only ate 1 bowl of ice cream.  But I drank ALL the Ensures.”  There had to have been 12 in the fridge.

He got hooked on Ensure when he broke his jaw and I keep some on hand, because it makes an easy snack for a boy on the go.  But to have 12 in 2 days…

“I was hungry.”

I guess no one else fed him, so he drank Ensure.

Well, he survived.

 Teaching on the Fly

I am the 1st counselor in Relief Society (our Women’s organization in church) I am over the teachers for Sunday lessons.  Well the other Sunday the assigned teacher didn’t show up.

I got to teach on the Fly.  Luckily because I am used to teaching Hypnobabies, it really isn’t a big deal for me to teach.  Though I usually have a lesson prepared.  I did have the assigned topic and manual – The Holy Ghost.  I pretty much touched on each section of the lesson and had people share their experiences.

I think it turned out as well as it could have!

-3-

Trading Services

I have a friend who can sew.  I love having her and that she shares her skills.  If I need something hemmed, I ask Jenny.  She also made T2′s costume for his competition.  It was easy – a tunic.  But not something I could do.

We finally figured out a skill I can share.  It is actually my boys skills.  Her daughter needed help editing a film for English class.  We have a Mac and my boys know how to do that.  So they helped her daughter with her project.

Voila – sewing for movie making.  Sounds good to me.  :)

Meals for this week

I think I should use this to monitor my meal planning/cooking progress.  This week I did do a meal plan.  I cooked most of my meals.  We had an unexpected dinner out on a night I actually had something already cooking in the crock pot.  But our friends are moving and they had a sudden goodbye dinner, so we couldn’t miss that!

Peru Planning

We are going to Machhu Picchu in April.  I wanted to do a tour for the whole thing.  But we are going with my sister and brother in law and they were not too excited about that.  So we are trying to piecemeal our trip together.  It is slowly coming together.  Not as fast as I want it to, but we have the Machu Pichu part planned and paid for.  Working on the Lake Titicaca part now.

I am trying to have faith it will all work out!  We have our plane tickets so it is definitely happening.

Five Things for Friday

February 22, 2013 in Parenting

I have been neglecting my blog a bit the last few months.  It is funny how I thought once T3 was in 1st grade I would have all this extra time.  I guess getting called as 1st counselor in Relief Society (my church’s women’s organization) put a kink in those plans.  I am hoping that doing the Five things for Friday will help me get back in the groove.

-1-

T1 is amazing to me.  He went on a 38 mile bike ride on his day off.  He and 2 friends biked to the peak of our local mountain range.

25 miles uphill with a 6700 feet elevation gain- they took a nap on top before heading down.  It was an 11 hour trip.

He does things that I could never do.

-2-

T2 is amazing to me as well.  He is an amazing performer and does things at age 12 that I couldn’t do at 42.  He loves performing with his group and he loves to do small groups and solos as well.

Here he is performing Close Every Door

-3-

Well, I must talk about T3 now.  He is funny and sweet and makes us laugh.

T1 (who is now 15) has some pretty impressive facial hair which DH makes him shave off for Sundays.  Much to the dismay of his little brothers (and apparently his friends).

So T3 says, “I want to be like Jesus.  That’s why I need a beard.”

I wonder when T1 will pull that line on his dad.

-4-

There was a brush fire near the boys charter school last weekend.  I was thinking of how devastating it would be if their school burnt down.  I don’t know if we would be relocated (I have no idea where they would put us) or if that would be the end of the school.  I would be SO sad to lose their school.  We LOVE it there!

Luckily it was put out quickly and easily.

-5-

Only kid in the Mac Store not on a digital device.  I have to say that I was tickled pink when we went to the Mac store to drop off our computer to get a new hard drive (old one was defective and had been recalled) that T3 settled down in the wagon we had used to bring the computer in and started doing his maze book.  I got quite a few positive comments about that.

I think we rely way to heavily on media to “entertain” our kids today.  (AKA keep them out of our hair).  But if we are constantly entertaining them, how will they ever be creative?

Sparkle Stories – GREAT if you have little kids

February 6, 2013 in Parenting

My boys were little before we had portable DVD players, so when we did road trips we listened to books on tape.  We actually still do that, though we take movie breaks sometimes during long trips (meaning over 2 hours).

It can be a challenge to find really good quality stories to listen to, that not only the kids enjoy, but we do to!  They have many categories of stories for kids 3 and up.

Well, I found a wonderful treasure – Sparkle Stories.  Beautiful stories for children that have great messages and are peaceful to listen to.  I had to share this wonderful Valentines Day special they are having.   A free Junkyard Tale story (T3′s favorite characters) and a free month subscription to Martin and Sylvia stories.  YAY!

We listen to these stories during carpool to our charter school and it makes the drive so wonderful.

But they are great for when kids are sick or if they need some down time and you want a break from a screen.  Listening to stories is a GREAT way to learn so many things.

Enjoy!

Gift Giving Simplified

4 Types of Gifts Can Guide You this Season

Part of the problem for me regarding gifts, is I keep finding more and more things that my boys would like.  They are also giving me more and more ideas.  So I always overbuy.

I love the idea of getting 4 types of gifts and leaving it at that.

  • something they WANT
  • something they NEED
  • something to WEAR
  • something to READ

Even if I just got them that, with the grandparent presents they would still get plenty.

There have been years they have gotten so much they don’t even open all they have gotten. They open the presents, but not the actual toy or kit. Start this tradition while they are young!

I love this blog post which talks about these and adds a few more categories.

Holiday Gift for You – CALM!

My dear friend and fellow Hypnobabies Instructor Janet Field has a Calm for the Holiday’s MP3

To get it, click here to go to Janet’s site and then click on the picture on the left hand side of her site.  It will guide you through the steps.  I loved listening to this last year and look forward to listening again this year.

Classical Piano Lullabies Give Away

November 30, 2012 in Give Away, Parenting, Review

I love a good lullaby CD.  Not just for the boys to listen to, but for me too, especially during car pool!  (T3 age 7 still listens to CDs every night while he falls asleep.)

So I was excited when Eran told me he had another Lullaby CD for me to review.  I have enjoyed every CD we have gotten from him.

and now

Classical Piano Lullabies

The boys were excited to listen.  They recognized his covers and knew they would like it.  We put in while fixing dinner one night and found it soothing and the familiar classical tunes were great.  I enjoyed the simple piano arrangements.  Then there was a fight as to whose room it would go to for bedtime.

T3 won.  Peaceful sleep for him = peaceful sleep to me.

Baby Massage Video

November 13, 2012 in Baby, Parenting, Review

I was excited to have the opportunity to review Baby Massage: The Gift of Love.  They sent me a copy so I could watch and review it.

I decided to share with my friend who had a baby 4 weeks ago, so she could put it into practice.  This is what she said.

When I got it out it I didn’t’ want to do a long  routine so I was happy to see there were different segments to do.  For instance a colic massage routine.  Each routine was short and only took a few minutes.  So before knew it I had done a few different ones.

The explanations were easy to follow along with.  Step by step instructions and demonstrated clearly.

My baby enjoyed the massage and it was fun to do with her.

I took a baby massage class with my 2nd baby and it was fun, but hard to get out of the house with a new baby.  Not to mention it was an hour long for 2 different sessions.

With the video it was easy to do, shorter with no driving needed!   I didn’t have to go anywhere and it was just as helpful as the class I took.

I would agree that this is a good instructional video, easy to learn from and makes a great gift!  :) I too think it is great that it is divided into short segments that allow moms to jump to the area or subject they want to work on if only a short amount of time is available.

Enjoy! I know your baby will. ;)

Guest Post – The Mom-To-Be’s Baby Countdown Checklist

November 9, 2012 in Baby, Parenting

When you are pregnant, there is never a one-size-fits-all answer for anything. While most parents can’t wait to start preparing for their baby’s arrival, a few may feel more apprehensive about the process. Luckily, these ten items cover the basics of getting ready to bring a baby home.

Set up the crib. Starting around the sixth month it is a good idea to begin to prepare the nursery. Choosing and setting up a crib or bassinet well in advance not only prevents last-minute panic, it can also help you start to realize that this pregnancy really is going to end with a baby in your home.

Prepare for diapering and feeding. Sleep, food, and diapering will cover most of the baby’s needs for the first several weeks. If you have those three areas covered, you can call your nursery complete – or you can go on to create a baby palace, it’s up to you.

St up the car seat. You will not be allowed to bring your baby home without a car seat. Before the baby arrives, make sure that you practice installing the seat properly. Many police and fire departments provide free checks to be sure car seats are installed the right way.

Pack a bag for the hospital. Include the items you will need for labor and delivery, the things your coach will need, items for your hospital stay (hospital time is ideal for finishing birth announcements; bring along announcements, envelopes, and postage), and an outfit and blankets for bringing the baby home.

Prepare to take pictures. It can seem like those first days with the baby will last forever and that you will never forget a moment, but babies change by the hour. Whether or not you want to chronicle labor and delivery, take a camera to the hospital to record the baby’s precious first days. Many hospitals will take pictures for birth announcements, but taking your own will save a lot of money.

Choose your pediatrician and day care if needed. Do this research early so you don’t find yourself scrambling at the last minute.

Prepare birth announcements. Choosing the type of birth announcements you want to use and addressing envelopes early will save time later when it is most precious. Preparing birth announcements is a great job for late in the pregnancy when your energy is low, but your desire to feel prepared is high.

Buy a baby care book. At some point you will be up in the middle of the night wondering if what your baby is doing is normal. Have a reference on hand, but don’t spend much time with it yet. After the baby comes, you will have a better idea of what you need to know and what you don’t.

Inventory and wash baby items. If you are having any showers, wait until they are done to take stock of what you’ve got. Don’t worry if you don’t have absolutely everything. The baby’s needs for the first months are really only to be warm, dry, well-fed, well-rested, and well-loved.

Cook and freeze meals for after the baby comes. Even if you have a good support system close by, these meals will be lifesavers during those first sleep deprived weeks.

Consciously Parenting a Book Review for Any Parents

August 6, 2012 in Parenting, Review

I got a free copy of this book to do a review.  It is the first volume in a 4 volume series.  This first volume reviews the 8 principles to consciously parenting.

I have been doing my massage therapy/therapy for the last year and was so pleased to see that so many of the things that have helped me in the past year are covered in this book.

The book discusses the patterns of our behaviors and how that affects our parenting and how we can break these patterns.  I especially love that they talk about how you have a physical response or feeling at the beginning of a pattern.  For me it is my neck gets tight or sometimes my chest gets tight.  I have learned when I start to feel one of these that I need to slow down and I have the power to choose to act a different way.  I don’t have to run my pattern.   This has changed how I parent.

I love her saying – Power of the Pause.  It is true, if you pause before you react you have time to choose how you want to respond!  Our relationships with our children – our connection – is so important in how they grow up and develop.  So valuing that relationship is key!

I like how she talks about how parenting begins while even still pregnant.  P 34 “our children communicate with us before they are even born.”

I think this is a really great book that gives some tools for better parenting  – from the inside out.  I know that for me I have read hundreds of parenting books, but it really wasn’t until I changed myself and figured out my patterns that I was able to shift and really start to connect with my boys.  That has made a huge shift in our relationship and their behavior!

This book has a lot of great information that can help parents.  I love that it really helps parents realize the answers are within themselves!

Click on over to the Consciously Parenting site to learn how you can get a copy.  I think it will be an amazing series.  I like that it is actually in 4 volumes so you can focus on one thing at a time.

Life Changing Book – I am humbled

July 17, 2012 in Birth, Parenting

We had a Virtual Book Tour between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day for my new book, The Gift of Giving Life.  It was so humbling and amazing to hear what other women had to say about our book, The Gift of Giving Life.   It was so much work, but it was so worth it!

Here are some of the highlights.

More relevant than ALL other pregnancy/birth books

“I am so glad this book was written. I have read lots and lots and LOTS of pregnancy/birth/early parenting books, but I have never read a book as pertinent to me as this one. I bought 4 copies; one for my doula buddy, and the other 2 for my pregnant sisters. I can’t wait to give them away! THANK YOU ladies for all that you put into this work. Your time and hard work are evident, and The Gift of Giving Life will have a prominent place on my bookshelf and in my soul. Also, my husband is annoyed because reading it makes me want another baby. ”  - Amber

Most Amazing Book I have Ever Read

“I preordered a book and it showed up late last week… I have NOT been able to put it down. I’m only half way through, but it’s already one of the most amazing books I’ve ever read. It has touched my heart and spirit in amazing ways. It has helped me to see the recent birth of my daughter in a much more spiritual manner. I already ordered another copy for a friend who just found out she is expecting with her first… I just want to buy a copy for everyone! Thank you so much all the sacrifice and love that went into creating this book.”   – Michelle

It is for EVERY woman, regardless of age or parental status

I just spent two hours, outdoors, reading this incredibly beautiful book. I highly recommend it. It’s not just for women in the birthing years. It is for every woman, regardless of age or parental status. I’ll be reviewing in on WBMW, probably next week. That’s how much I think of this piece of work. ♥  - Kathryn

Not just for pregnant women!

“I just talked to my Dad’s wife (my new step-mom) who is reading the book and she said that it is not just for pregnant women it is for all women. She is done having babies but said it makes her feel so amazing for being a woman.”  - Felice

Life Changing Book

Here is a bit from an early review from Jocelyn on her blog We Talk of Christ, We Rejoice in Christ.  Definitely go read the whole thing.  But I loved these parts.

I’ll admit that when I heard about this book on my friend Heather’s blog, I wondered if it was going to be very granola…and TMI.  I wondered if it was going to push certain ways to be a Mother.  I wasn’t sure I’d fit into their recommended “way”.
But from the taste that I received yesterday, I realized that this is going to be the adventure of a lifetime (times 22 women’s lifetimes)…as that is what giving the gift of life to another person is:  the adventure of a lifetime.
Although I’ve only just begun the journey through this book, I am able to say with confidence that this book is one of those life-changing books that “found me.”
This is my book of the year!  It is more than a book on Motherhood or giving birth.  It is a book about placing your hand squarely in the Lord’s and saying, “Here am I, send me!”

Fulfilling as childbirth worker and mother

“Got my book yesterday, I cannot tell you how fulfilling as a doula, childbirth advocate and LDS mother this book has been so far. I can’t begin to thank you all”   – Natalie

An amazing review by Bonnie Blythe on her blog

Never in my years of LDS study have I found such a wide-ranging survey of wisdom and personal experience in relation to birth as this 521-page treasure comprises. Nowhere else will you find the tenets of LDS faith employed with greater grace and wisdom to empower a birthing mother, and by extension, her entire family.  - Bonnie

Regardless of where you are in your mothering journey:

Page after page, of this lovely book, brought back so many beautiful feelings, and memories, about the sacredness of giving birth, that for this, now Nana, also brought some tears of joy. The gift of giving life is the crowning blessing of being a woman. Whether you’re just beginning this magical journey, or find yourself at the place where you can look back on the miraculous process that you’ve already passed, it is an experience that will forever change how a woman looks into, and toward eternity.  Kathryn of Well Behaved Mormon Woman

Honors ALL women regardless of how they birth

Here is the truly amazing thing about this book.  It spoke to me as a natural birth advocate- it resonated with me.  Then it went farther- this isn’t just a book for women who home birth or women who skipped the epidural- it is a book for all women.  It honors all women in all the ways they give (or don’t) birth.

There are stories within about adoption, infertility, c-section, induction, unassisted birth, and everything within the spectrum of birth and motherhood.  “The Gift of Giving Life” covers all the bases.  It honors and embraces and respects all women as mothers no matter how they choose or must give birth.

“The Gift of Giving Life” really isn’t just for women who call themselves Mormon though.  I think anybody who is interested in the spirituality and the divinity of motherhood and birth would enjoy this book.  It fills in gaps left by the current natural childbirth literature and does so completely and with love and respect for all women.   – Sarah from  Mama Birth

Covers Every Issue You Could Hope For

It even met my expectations in that it covered just about every issue I hoped it would. I would say, for example, “I wish this had a section on VBAC,” and then I would find it in the next chapter. That happened many times. I can’t believe the diversity of topics covered. The book contains a great variety of birth knowledge, science, research, LDS quotes, scriptures, guide to meditation, thoughts on creating a spiritual baby shower, healing and forgiveness, beautifully written histories of LDS women, testimonies of Jesus Christ and the Atonement, and of course many personal stories of courage and triumph. “The Gift of Giving Life” can validate women no matter what birth choices she makes or has made, and increase her feeling of closeness to other women, both living and passed on.

This is not just a book about pregnancy and childbirth- though it is certainly is about that. In a world where women’s divine and sacred powers are frustrated and belittled, this book brings hope and empowerment. In a world that teaches us to rely on the “arm of flesh” this book helps bring back our trust in Heavenly Father. As I read about the Lord’s hand in the stories and essays, I realized that Heavenly Father is there- not just through our birth journeys- but throughout all of motherhood, to help and deliver us in a wide variety of circumstances. This is a knowledge that every woman can benefit from.  – Mandy from Mandy Jane’s Designs.
