N’s birth.
I first met N at the library when I did my library display! She worked there and was pregnant, so asked me some questions. I invited her to join my Hypnobabies class and she did. Half way through class she decided she wanted to hire me as her doula, but at a reduced rate. She was really sweet and I knew her previously to the class, so I offered her my friends and family rate, but it was still above what she could afford. I offered her some names of doulas in training. But she never called them. Her mom was going to be there and her DH, I really thought she would do fine without me. I had another mom due the same day she was and when my DH ended up going out of town to London unexpectedly I was glad she hadn’t hired me, as I was stressed out enough worrying about making it to V’s birth.
I was excited to get a message from N saying her baby was born and that it went well and it was really enjoyable. I finally got to talk to her on Sunday to get all the details. Here is the story.
2 days before her due date about 10:30 in the morning, she started having some PW, she described them as some crampiness. After about 2 hours she told her DH it was time to go to the hospital. He said it was way to early. He called the hospital and they said it was way to early. She was a first time mom, there were hours and hours left.
N insisted he start getting the car ready. He did but very slowly. She was resting upstairs, but could tell things were getting more serious. Then her water broke. He then became more concentrated on getting things into the car. By 1:30 they were in the car heading to the hospital. N was starting to feel a little pushy, but stayed calm. They got to the hospital around 2. She walks up to the desk at L & D. They say, “Go sit over there and wait.” She says, “I feel like pushing” Very calmly, they didn’t really believe her, but brought her to a room. A nurse checked her and then ran out into the hall calling for an OB. DH was downstairs parking the car and they were telling her it was time to push! She calmly said, “I want to wait until my husband gets back before I have the baby.”
He came in a few minutes later and she pushed the baby out in about 10 minutes. Everyone was so amazed at how quick and easy her birth was, under 4 hours for a first time mom. They were especially impressed at how calm she was during the whole thing.
She said, “The class (Hypnobabies) really helped me. The birth was really enjoyable. It’s amazing, I enjoyed it!”
She was so cute during class, because she kept saying, “I can get an epidural at any time, right?” She was really not sure if the hypnosis would work, if she would be able to go un-medicated. But she did and she was very happy!
N had a nurse who the second day really tried to push formula on the baby. Saying he wasn’t getting enough to eat, etc. But she said, it was that the nurse didn’t want to take the time to show her how to help him to latch. So she asked for a new nurse! I was so proud of her, because we talked in class about how you have the right to do that. But so many moms don’t. She did ask and got a more supportive nurse and nursing is going well now.
that is awesome! i’m so happy she asked for another nurse:)
