52 Weeks of Organizing- Week 4 Tupperware, Bowls and Pans

Friday, January 28th, 2011

I can’t tell you how motivating it is for me to take pictures!  My kids are thinking I am a little crazy with all the pictures I am taking.

My Tupperware drawer has been driving me crazy for over a year.  I kept re-organizing it and putting it back in the same cabinet.  That didn’t work.  It was too deep and narrow, so I could never find lids and it always caused a mess almost every day when I made lunches.

I knew I needed a CHANGE.  So I followed Laura’s process steps.  I decided to think outside of the box and re-organize all my pots, pans, bowls, etc.

I made a Plan of attack – re-org all those cabinets.

Here they are.  The other ones have roll out drawers and pretty much served me well.  But I had a lot of things there I rarely used, so thought if I put them in the Tupperware cabinet it would free up a drawer for the Tupperware!

I Removed all of the items.  (Tupperware and some other things are on the floor)

I Organized all the items into like piles. I made a pile of things to give away or put in the recycling.

Give away or recycle

I Containerized them – put them in different places.

My easy to get Tupperware!

I will Evaluate – So far SO GOOD!  I can actually get my lunch containers out easily and the items I put in the narrow cabinet, I rarely use, except the cutting boards, which are easily accessible.

Solve things that don’t work.  (nothing yet)

Smile and enjoy!

(Updated, I have had it like this a few days and still LOVE it!)

This can tell the future!

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Thing 1 found a Pregnancy Wheel I had gotten at the DASC Banquet.  He was looking at it and trying to figure out what it was.  All while I was trying to get the boys out the door to an appointment.

  • T1- What is this?
  • Me – It helps moms figure out their due date.
  • T1 – This can tell the future!
  • Me – Not really, it is more of a guess then knowing for sure.
  • T1- What is last menses mean?
  • Me – It is the date of the moms last period, when her uterus cleans itself out.
  • T1 – Still amazed “Wow, it can tell the future!”

Sadly, so many care providers and moms think that this wheel does have magical properties of telling the future. They get that due date stuck in their mind.

They think it actually means something.

Only 5% of moms actually birth on their due dates.  That means 95% of moms don’t have their baby on their due date!

If everyone can keep in mind it is a guess month – a 5 week window of when a baby can come.  Then so many interventions, like inductions would be lessened.

Umbilical Card Review

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

That is right, Umbilical CARD.

I like to send out Thank You Cards to the care providers who help at births I attend.  Especially for the nurses who spend so much time helping protect our space.

I used to send out plain old notecards.

Then I found Umbilical Cards.  They are SO cute and I think really make a statement.  I have used them for my last few Thank You cards.  I have also used them for baby showers.

I will say that for mailing you may want to go with the Gestationary.  With the Umilical Card I worry you have to pay more postage because they are thicker?  I put an extra stamp on just in case.  So I am using them for baby showers where I hand deliver the card.

But everyone who has gotten one loves them.

I think it is a great idea for

  • birth workers
  • baby shower gifts
  • thank you notes

Veronica’s Wonderful VBAC

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Veronica was such a well educated mom.  She took Hypnobabies.  Her education and Hypnobabies tools served her well during her birth.  She was very empowered and didn’t let anyone’s negative attitude or misinformation affect her birth!  It was an honor to be her doula.  I am sharing her story with her permission.

1:44 AM on Saturday the 11th of December I get a call from Veronica.  Her Pressure Waves started around 10 pm at 15 minutes apart.  They are now 10 minutes apart.  She has to stand and rock through them.  Chad has had very little sleep so I go to help support her.

(I call Jenn to come and watch my kids since Rob and T2 are on a campout.  I know she has a crazy day on Saturday – so leave instructions for her to pass out my kids to any of our friends who will take them.  I don’t think about them again until after the baby is born.  I know Jenn has made sure they are safe and happy.)

2:50 I get to Veronica’s house.  Her kids are just leaving with the grandparents.

Her pressure waves are still 10 minutes apart lasting about a minute.  I help her get in hands and knees position leaning on sofa, this allows her to sleep between pressure waves.

3:40 she eats some soup and then sits on the birth ball leaning on the sofa.  She is sleeping between pressure waves.  She is very tired.

4:05 she feels the baby make a distinct movement (turning) during a pressure wave and feels a lot of pressure on her cervix.

She starts vocalizing a bit through her waves which have jumped up to 4-5 minutes apart.

The intensity is different and she wonders if it is time to go.

4:40 we head out to the hospital.  Veronica vomits in the car.

5 we get to hospital.

She refused to ride upstairs in the wheelchair, because it is hard for her to sit through a pressure wave.  The nurse is not happy about it, but I love how empowered Veronica was.  She stood up for her rights and knew her needs were more important than the nurses.

In triage Veronica refuses a gown and after a quick cervical check gets on her hands and knees for monitoring.  Veronica doesn’t want to know how dilated she is, but later I find out she was 4cm (where she was “stuck” last time leading to Failure to progress for her cesarean)  It was a smart choice to not find out how dilated she is.

5:30 we are getting settled into a room.

6:15 Veronica sits on the rocking chair and dozes between pressure waves.  Chad sleeps on other chair.  She is still very tired and while she is able to sleep between pressure waves, they jolt her awake during them.

7 we get a new nurse, Sally

7:15 Veronica feels urge to poop with pressure waves.  We try some new positions: kneeling, sitting on the ball and end up back on the rocking chair so she can really rest.

8:30 Veronica is very tired and wants to know if there is anything she can get to help her rest.  She needs to be checked first and we are told Dr. A.  will be in soon to check her.

9 we are back to standing through the pressure waves.  She is SO tired she is falling asleep standing up between pressure waves.  We end up back on the chair about 9:30.  Dr. A. still hasn’t come and she is getting frustrated.

10 – Dr. A. is doing a procedure and may be another 30-40 minutes.

10:15 we get in the bath while we wait.  She loves it there.  It is hard to keep the baby on the telemetric monitors and I try to hold them on. Chad holds her arm with the IV up so it won’t get wet.  We are all cozy in the bathroom.

11:45 out of the bath

12:00 Dr. A.  comes in  and checks her.  She tells me in the hall she is at 6cm -2 station.  She would like to break her water and asks why Veronica doesn’t want to do that.  I explain that she wants as little intervention as possible and I tell her I will talk to her about it.

I go in and talk to Veronica and Chad.  She has been exhausted from the beginning of her birthing time and she just wants to sleep.  She is feeling very fractured, being asleep between pressure waves and then jolted awake by them, so it is hard to stay on top of things.  Currently she is experiencing intense discomfort in her thighs during the waves and is just needing to sleep.

We talk about the options:

  • Nubain
  • Epidural
  • Keep on doing what she is doing.

I reassure her she is doing great, she has progressed past where she was stuck last time.  She wonders if the epidural will slow things down (her biggest fear)  I tell her there is no way to know, but she has a great pattern of pressure waves and I think they will keep going.

After much thinking and talking she decides to get the epidural so she can rest.

By 1:30 she has the epidural and is resting.  It was so exciting that a few minutes after getting the epidural her water breaks on its own!

2:15 switch to other side.

2:30 gets a bolus because the discomfort in the thighs has returned.

2:45 Veronica gets a temporary catheter to empty bladder.  A check shows she is 8cm and 0 station!

3:10 She has urge to push with pressure waves

3:15 A quick check finds only an anterior lip Tears of joy when we tell her it is almost time to push!

3:40 still anterior lip and we flip her to the other side.  She is breathing the baby down with these urges to push.

At 4:15 she is really bearing down and another check reveals she is complete.

Yay! She can hardly believe the time is here to push!

She starts pushing using the mirror to inspire her

4:40 Her friend Emily arrives.

Pushing is going great.  Veronica is anxious for baby to get here!

5:20 Dr. A comes in and helps do perineal massage and encourages Veronica.

5:32 P.  is born and goes straight onto mom!

7 pounds 15 ounces

19.5 inches.

Emily and I go to get some dinner from Ruby’s after P. is latched on and nursing well.  We all eat a celebratory meal together.

It was a great birth.  Veronica and Chad were a great team and did awesome.  I think if Veronica hadn’t been so exhausted throughout the whole birth that she easily could have gone un-medicated.  But she was exhausted and falling asleep between pressure waves and just needed to rest so she could have the energy to push when the time came.  I think that she did awesome!  It was an honor to be at P’s birth.  :)

52 Goals Weekly Update

Monday, January 24th, 2011

I decided to break this off from my 52 organization post.  Mostly because Sunday is a nice day for me to review the week before and knowing I was going to post this I actually did a Menu Plan for this week!

I am also going to be following a weekly schedule something like this on my blog.

  • Monday – Goal Update and any funny family things
  • Tuesday – Terrific Birth Story
  • Wednesday – Review or Give Away
  • Thursday -  Birth Related Post
  • Friday – 52 Weeks of Organization
  • Saturday – open for either bonus post or a day of rest (this is actually the day I get my Sunday Surf ready, I really rest on Sunday!)
  • Sunday – Sunday Surf

  2. Family Home Evening (family night/planning and game) Every Week. Yes!

  6. Pray Daily – yes
  7. walk 4 times a week – 3 times (improving!)
  8. Cook healthy homemade meals 3 times a week – 2 times. We even cooked from scratch Chicken Pot Pie with Thing 1 at the helm! He had a cooking camp over the holidays and he made this. 9. Make a Weekly Meal Plan – YES!!
  10. Keep the Kitchen Table CLEAN! – No

    our table

  11. Go on 3 dates a month – 1 date so far.
  12. Go on a Hike Each Month – Not yet, were supposed to go yesterday but didn’t happen.
  13. Be active participant in my 3 book clubs (4th on months only when it is feasible) – Yes for 3, I will not go to my 4th this month because they switched nights this month to my other book club night. It is sort of a relief because I didn’t know if I would get that book read.
  14. Teach 22 couples in my Hypnobabies – Have sent out packages to a few potential students!
  15. Attend 5 great births as a Doula – Attended 1. Have another mom due next week and have interview for a potential client in June! :)

While we were cooking as a family I was getting stressed out (I usually do cooking) My kids said, “Maybe you have a trapped emotion about cooking!” We tested, I did and so we released it. Once I released it I actually enjoyed cooking. I was amazed.
  17. Loose 15 pounds – Using Weight Release Program – On week 3 of this and enjoying it! You do class 3 for 2 weeks. I had a big break through, but I am saving sharing that for when I do a series on the program, which I need to start soon.
  18. Start eating Green Smoothies - Have spinach in my fridge and it is going bad. Still in there getting worse. I need to get that in the garbage! :(
  19. Support T1 as he earns his Eagle Scout. Took T1 to meet with a merit badge counselor on a certain merit badge he is working on.
  20. Move all downstairs toys – upstairs and come up with new system to keep downstairs clean – Have moved most upstairs, trying to figure out new system.
  21. Volunteer 50 hours a school year at boys school – Have been doing about an hour a week.
  22. Follow the Spirit when making big decisions (little ones too)- Had a good opportunity to do this this week!
  23. Be patient with my Three Things and Rob too.
  24. Read 24 books and review them on Good Reads. I have read 3 books so far.

Don’t YELL at the Kids before school.

Monday, January 24th, 2011

In our simplicity parenting book club we were talking about having simple routines to make mornings easier.  It is hard to not feel frantic trying to get kids out the door to school.

I told them I have a simple goal

mano

“Don’t yell at the kids before school.”

Apparently I am totally fine yelling at them after school. ;)

Somehow I feel if I can send them off to school with a calm loving demeanor, it can really help set the tone for the day.  I also find if I can do this, the rest of the day once they get home goes better too!

One of the keys to not yelling is to have everyone get up 10 minutes earlier then you are right now.  10 minutes is huge.

I also have different systems for each boy to help them know what they need to do in the morning.

  • Thing 3 uses Accountable Kids
  • Thing 2 I have written out what his tasks are in the morning on a notecard and he likes to reference that.
  • Thing 1 needs one word verbal prompts scattered throughout the morning.  Teeth, Shoes, Lunch, Trumpet.  He wanders around between things and I say the next item.  Shoes and he wanders over and gets them on.

But I think I have only yelled once so far this school year.  When I got up late and had to take a shower.  So I ran up to take one while they were eating breakfast, thinking they would continue to get ready.  Note to self: Do not do THAT again!

I could care less about ACOG.

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

ACOG has come out with an opinion on home birth.

Not surprisingly they are against it.

I should care because they share biased information that many people will take as truths.

But I think in the end moms who educate themselves will make the best choice for them.  For some the best choice is hospital birth and for some the best choice is home birth.

I think that the moms who chose homebirth are like me, they don’t care what ACOG thinks. They understand that ACOG is about protecting OBs, not protecting moms.

If you care and want to hear what they said, here are some blog posts about it.

Stand and Deliver posted the whole ACOG position.  So you can read it there.  Interesting comments in the comment section.

Unnecesarean had a great post too.

Mama Birth quoted from it and added her own thoughts.  She sums up by saying:

I think the reason that the powers that be care at all about home birth is not that they are worried about yours or my safety, it is because they realize on some level, that birth can be much more than they will ever be able to offer in their hospitals. They don’t want the word to get out. That, could hurt their bottom line.

Again, my point.  ACOG’s purpose isn’t to protect moms, it is to protect OBs.   Since I am not an OB I don’t care what they think.  ;)
