Government rations cesareans

There are some benefits of nationalized health care.  The government can have more of an impact on health outcomes.  But I only see it benefiting countries where they want to save money!   I imagine in America the ACOG would want more cesareans, so their Obstetricians could make more money. I was excited to see this

New Doula clients

I am so excited, after a self-imposed 6 month break from doulaing, I have 2 and maybe soon 3 clients.  1 was one of my Hypnobabies students and she is having a homebirth.  I am SO excited for that.  I love being a doula at homebirths.  There is such a neat feeling at them. 1

My 2 favorite birth blogs

both have great posts about cesareans this week. Rixa’s Blog Stand and Deliver is always fun to read.   Rixa had an unassisted birth with her first baby and did her Dissertation on Unassisted Birth.  She is expecting again, so it is fun to see her belly shots and hear her pondering her upcoming birth.  It

Blaming moms for cesareans.

I LOVED this article by Jennifer Block.  (I also LOVED her book Pushed.)  In the article she talks about how we need to stop blaming moms for cesareans.  I agree, usually when moms have chosen a cesarean, there is a care provider pushing it.  Obviously there are often times when a cesarean is medically necessary.  But many “elective”

Types of Cesareans

There seems to be an epidemic of Emergency Cesareans.  When I talk with moms, or read birth stories, many label their cesareans as emergency’s.  But as I ask questions or as I read details, I see that it wasn’t a true medical emergency, but mom has been led to believe it was.  Even my cesarean,

Extra babies in December?

There was a wonderful article in the Wall Street Journal about the fact that some families and OBs schedule more  inductions or cesareans in December.   With the holidays and the tax breaks it seems harmless.  But the article, Why Every Week of Pregnancy Counts helps explain why it can actually cause problems instead of prevent them.

Staying Positive

I loved this post by Rural Doctor about Getting Back on the Horse.  It was about a birth she attended after a scary birth the night before.  I love that she is able to stay logical and realize that one negative birth doesn’t mean you have to stop trusting birth and she is able to

Pelvis too small?

There are care providers who try to scare their patients into cesareans because their pelvis is too small.  I know there are different types of pelvises.  Regardless of the type a mom should be able to have a vaginal birth, if she is well supported and allowed to find positions that feel right to her body!  I just

Choose your OB wisely

You hear “stories” of OB’s who really think everyone should have a Cesarean.  Really ask your OB what they think about birth.  Their attitudes can have a major impact on the interventions you get. It is fascinating to read this story of an intern and the interaction with the supervising OB during a birth.  To

I loved to read this wonderful VBAC story from the eyes of the Doctor.  It demonstrates the changes in attitude regarding VBAC’s and how women have to fight for the right to have the birth they want.  When I started my intern year, our hospital had a very high successful VBAC rate and a relatively
